Literature Text

Your trouble was eased when tanks began bombing again in the distance. You couldn't quite tell whether it was the German army or the enemy firing. Whoever it was, there must be casualties. You felt your General grab your wrist, pulling you out of the wooden area.

"I still demand the answer to my question," you heard General Beilschmidt say. "When we get out of here safe and sound that is." You grin at his undead confidence.

"I'll even have a competition with you, General." You felt him quicken the pace, his leg still limping a little bit. He didn't talk, motioning for you to go on. "We'll see who survives the longest; pinky promise?" You felt him stop to turn around, rising up his pinky.

You entwine your pinky with his as you began to run off again, in a pace that you knew he could follow even with his wound.

He was strong enough.

He would live. Just as he promised.

You pulled out your gun, wrapping the extra bullets around your body for easy access to reloading. The enemy unloaded their soldiers as you shot them endlessly.

It seemed almost forever until all of them were gone.

You began to look around the city with your naked eyes. It was all in ruins. Cropped buildings were laying on the dirty ground with pieces of cement and stone here and there.

This place seemed like a shatter city.

And it was.

By now, both sides of casualties were unusually high; civilians and whatnot. Dead bodies were everywhere you stepped.

You continue shooting by instinct, moving into a new area. You kept reloading your gun while firing; one second of hesitation could get you in the sea of corpses.

A soldier tapped you on the back as you turned instantaneously.

It was the enemy, no less. He had found your hiding place.

You heard a gun trigger being pulled as blood splatter the floor.

Your eyes met blue as you smiled. "You almost broke our promise." You went back to looking at the destructed scene before your eyes.

"Thanks," you said, grateful. "Aren't you mad?"

"I am, for lying to me. But that doesn't change the fact that you're a good soldier." He paused before speaking up again. "Keep yourself alive." He picked up his weapon from the floor and began to run off somewhere else. You grin slightly.

It was your new goal.

To survive.

This survival game was going to get good. You continue to shoot the enemy as they drove into the city nonstop. You felt the area clear as you moved on, again hiding behind the thick bushes.

To live was the idea.

But was living really that easy in a war?

You had to face the fact that you were to be shot down any second, without seeing anyone ever again.

Piles of bodies lay on the floor, still as silence. Would yours soon be in that pile too?

...

Night set in. The dark aura was uneasy, seeming deadly as always. Bodies began to rot, sending out a horrible odor.

You were now separated from everyone else on your squad, low on bullets, food and especially water. You touched the railing of the gun, embracing it lightly as it was your life. It didn't help for your eyes to shed a tear at the moment, but you couldn't help it.

You thought about the times back at the camp.

General Beilschmidt was all that came to mind.

That time at the training room.

"You're lifting it wrong," he chided. 'You will hurt your muscle this way, (L/N).' General Beilschmidt's hands landed on your wrist, showing you the proper way of pushing the lift without using as much energy as it would normally take..."

More tears continue to fall at the tender thoughts of him.

"'One day,'" you heard him answer, still looking into the sky. "'We'll all have a happy ending somehow. Just wish for it...'"

You wanted your ending. With him. And only him.

A loud cry sudden erupts from the distance from a man.

"General Beilschmidt!"

You began to run toward the call.

Was he going to break that promise?

Then what is the purpose of your life without him?

You had to tell him everything once you see him.

Every truth, every lie.

Everything was darkness as you ran.

Then a light began to hit your eye.

You enter the tent without thought.

And there he was.

...
